Las year's Carabao Cup winners Liverpool will have the opportunity to win the trophy for a record extending 11th time and third in the last four years.
Arne Slot’s side will be chomping at the bit heading into Sunday’s final, with their hopes of a treble vanishing as they crashed out of the Champions League in the round of 16 against PSG.
The Red’s road to the final has been fairly straight forward despite only facing off against Premier League sides along the way. The third round saw them comfortably beat West Ham 5-1, with a double from Cody Gakpo helping them towards a 3-2 win over Brighton in the fourth round before dispatching a struggling Southampton side at St Mary’s in the quarter final, winning 2-1.
There was a slight hiccup in the first leg of the semi-final, a late goal from Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall gave Spurs the lead before they travelled to Anfield and were swept aside by a rampant Liverpool. With goals from Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil Van Dijk securing Liverpool their place in the final.
The Red’s will be without Trent Alexander-Arnold for their trip to Wembley. The right-back picked up an apparent knee injury midway through the second half of Liverpool’s Champions League defeat to PSG. Conor Bradley would’ve been the ideal replacement having deputized in place of Alexander-Arnold on many occasions this season, but the Northern Ireland international is also sidelined.
With Joe Gomez also out, it is likely that Jarell Quansah fills in at full-back. Ibrahima Konate also limped off during their Champions League clash, but with Arne Slot stating it was due to fatigue the Frenchman should be available.
Having finished runners up on two occasions, the latest as recently as 2023 when they were defeated 2-0 to Manchester United, Newcastle are still yet to get their hands on the Carabao Cup. If the Magpies are successful this weekend it would be their first major trophy win since their FA Cup triumph in 1955.
The Magpies head into Sunday's final following a win over West Ham on Monday night, only their second in their past five games which includes a 2-0 defeat against their co-finalists at Anfield.
Newcastle’s road to the final has been an impressive one, after squeezing through the second round on penalties to Nottingham Forest, Newcastle have run through a multitude of London clubs. First defeating AFC Wimbledon 1-0 in the third round thanks to a penalty from defender Fabian Schar, before moving over to the west of the capital beating both Chelsea and Brentford 2-0 and 3-1 respectively.
The Magpies then swept aside Arsenal in the semi-final, defeating the Gunners 2-0 at the Emirates thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon. Another goal from Gordon as well as a first half strike from Jacob Murphy helped Newcastle replicate that scoreline at St James’ Park in the second leg.
Similarly to their opponents, Eddie Howe’s men have their own injury woes in defence. Following an impressive breakthrough season, left back Lewis Hall will be out until next campaign following successful foot surgery. Sven Botman only recently returned from a 10 month lay off after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament last year, but suffered another injury to his knee earlier this month which will see him out for some time. Semi-final goalscorer Anthony Gordon is suspended for the final after picking up a red card for violent conduct in Newcastle's FA Cup extra time loss to Brighton.
