Bayer Leverkusen shattered a record previously held by Premier League-winning manager Antonio Conte as they reached the Europa League semi finals.

Xabi Alonso's side overcame West Ham 3-1 on aggregate, holding the Irons to a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium in the second leg of their quarter final tie after winning the first leg 2-0 in Leverkusen.

Manchester United target Jeremie Frimpong scored a late equaliser to cancel out Michail Antonio's 13th-minute opener, meaning the German outfit are still yet to be beaten this season.

The result took the recent Bundesliga champions' unbeaten run in all competitions to 44 games, a new record for a team in Europe's top five leagues.

Juventus previously boasted the longest undefeated streak, going 43 matches without loss in their 2011/12 Serie A campaign as they lifted the league title under the leadership of former Chelsea and Tottenham boss Antonio Conte.

This is the latest unprecedented achievement for Alonso's men this term, who secured a first-ever Bundesliga title with a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen in their last match.

Leverkusen ended Bayern Munich's era of dominance in Germany, denying them a 12th consecutive domestic success with five games to go.

And Alonso, who has committed to staying at the club for another year despite interest from Liverpool, will be hoping his side can go one better than Conte's Juventus did in their record-breaking season.

The Italian giants finished their league campaign unbeaten, not losing a single game between May 2011 and May 2012, but were then undone in their final match as they were beaten by Napoli in the Coppa Italia final.

Leverkusen meanwhile remain in the hunt for the treble, as they look to add the Europa League and DFB Pokal crowns to Bundesliga glory, having also reached the final of the German cup competition.

The runaway champions will face Roma in their European semi final, after they advanced with a 3-1 victory over Italian rivals AC Milan, having won both legs 2-1 and 1-0 respectively.

And Leverkusen will aim to preserve their spotless record in their remaining games, which includes a DFB Pokal final against Kaiserslautern in May, having now not tasted defeat since their final day loss to VfL Bochum at the end of last season.
