Leeds United casting an eye over ex-Manchester United and Sunderland goalkeeper

Leeds United have taken young goalkeeper Max Johnstone on trial.

The 20-year-old played for a youthful Whites side in a friendly against non-league outfit Tadcaster Albion yesterday and is hoping to earn a deal, according to a report by the Shields Gazette.

Johnstone was released by Sunderland at the end of the season following their failure to gain promotion from League One.

He only joined the North-East side last summer but spent just a single campaign with the Black Cats. He was a key player for their Under-23’s under Elliott Dickman.

Johnstone, who was born in Preston, had spells as a youngster in the academies at Fleetwood Town and Manchester United before his move to Sunderland.

His brother, Sam, plays in the Championship for West Bromwich Albion and has also previously played for Manchester United.

Leeds are keen on bolstering their youth ranks further this summer and have already added to their ranks by landing highly-rated midfielder Liam McCarron from League Two side Carlisle United.

Marcelo Bielsa is no stranger to giving a young player a chance in the first team as seen last season with the likes of Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton getting regular run outs.

Johnstone will be hoping to earn a contract with the Yorkshire side and be a starter for their Under-23’s. He would also add more depth into the Whites’ senior goalkeeping department in preparation for the next campaign.
