Ella Toone celebrates for Manchester United
Manchester United have scored in each of their past 13 Women's Super League away games

Ella Toone came off the bench to score a superb winner for Manchester United against Leicester City at King Power Stadium.

A fine performance from home goalkeeper Janina Leitzig had kept United at bay before Toone's stunning long-range strike in the 83rd minute.

Victory means fourth-placed United are now three points above Liverpool in fifth, having played a game more.

Leicester remain 10th but are comfortably clear of relegation.

The visitors threatened throughout but Leitzig produced numerous saves to deny Geyse, Melvine Malard and Leah Galton before Toone's moment of magic.

Leicester's Yuka Momiki hit the post in the second half when she got on the end of Missy Goodwin's rebounded strike, but her effort bounced back off the woodwork and spun away from team-mate Lena Petermann.

That was the hosts' biggest opportunity but, although they only had one shot on target, they caused United's defence problems in an encouraging display.

United's victory ends a run of four away games without a win.

Toone's moment of magic proves difference

United had won just one of their previous three WSL matches and knew failure to pick up points on Sunday would invite pressure from rivals Liverpool.

They have often underwhelmed this season but, even though they needed a moment of magic from Toone to break the deadlock, United did create enough chances throughout.

Geyse had the best of them when her powerful drive was steered behind by Leitzig in the first half and the Leicester goalkeeper's outstretched leg blocked the Brazilian's strike in the second half.

But Leicester, despite failing to record a shot on target until the 79th minute, were also dangerous.

Jutta Rantala's dipping effort flew inches over the crossbar, Momiki's low effort tested goalkeeper Mary Earps and Saori Takarada almost forced a save from the England number one.

But with the Women's FA Cup final in May the main priority for United, this was job done in the league as they look to hold on to fourth, while Leicester can look to build for next season.

    Since the Leicester manager was sacked while the player keeps her job it's all gone down the pan, those who sacked the manager need to be asked the logic of there decision and secondly what the hell someone's private life has to do with them !. Relations in the work place have always happened but not the illogical crazy bias rules we now have thrust upon us all, it's sad.

    First time watching womens football {complimentry tickets)... Gave it a real good go, didnt want to be one of those "Haters".. When the 11 minutes of injury time were shown we were one of many who could take no more and headed for the exit. Fantastic goal by their sub was the only highlight.

    Toone is the only one that can shoot. Awful technique from most of the Man Utd women. Rely far too much on Williams and her excellent heading ability. A goal is a goal, but the ratio of headed goals to shots suggests that without Williams they wouldn't be in the top 6.

    Visited as a neutral. Very poor fare served up - far too much side ways keeping the ball tactics from both teams and a complete failure to hit the ball hard to make it go faster. Not a good advert for ladies professional football. I won't be returning as this League is clearly a long way from being Super.

    Still got the wrong Manager, no investment, sub standard subs bench. Some good players but they need better and soon otherwise it will be "best of the rest" for years!

    Keep hearing how each week the performances are getting better. If that’s true why are most of the grounds empty each week. C’mon ladies get behind your teams and into the grounds.

    Always seems to be something wrong with United. Sometimes it seems like attitude. Depending on which attitude turns up at Wembley could make the difference on whether they win the cup or not. Not sure about the manager, seems to have his head in a bucket sometimes. Mary Earps should move on. Shes banging her head on a brick wall there..
