Erik Ten Hag and his Manchester United players will be forced to take pay cuts for not reaching the Champions League, talkSPORT understands.

The under-fire manager has it written into his contract that his wages will be slashed by as much as 25 per cent for failing to deliver a top four finish, which results in automatic qualification to Europe's top club competition.

The majority of the United squad will also be hit in the pocket in an effort to make success or failure on the pitch a collective effort.

It is also means Ten Hag would be entitled to a smaller compensation package if United decide to part company with their manager at the end of the season.

The Red Devils are currently seventh in the Premier League and a huge 16 points off fourth place Aston Villa.

Man United will face Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The club's lowest ever Premier League finish was seventh in the 2013/14 season.

Ten Hag has led the Red Devils to back-to-back FA Cup finals, and won the Carabao Cup last season.

Their performance against Coventry in Sunday's semi-final piled further pressure onto the Dutchman.

They threw away a 3-0 lead and had to rely on penalties to book a date with Man City in the final.

There are calls for Ten Hag to be sacked in the summer with the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate linked with the job.

He came out firing in his press conference on Tuesday, however, hitting back at recent media comments.

"I would say it's over-performing with all the problems we have had," said the Dutchman of the possibility of silverware.

"Getting into the final is already a big achievement, but we are here for trophies. We have an opportunity to win a trophy and that is good. But we are not satisfied by being in the final, we want to win it and that is what we will go for and it's our mentality.

"That is why we are successful. That's why I am successful over 10 years as a manager, I always bring out the maximum of each squad."

Ten Hag was in a combative mood in the press room ahead of Wednesday's Premier League clash with Sheffield United, branding the media reaction to his side's cup display 'embarrassing' and 'a disgrace'.
