Former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick confirmed an approach to become Bayern Munich's next manager.

Thomas Tuchel will leave the Bundesliga giants at the end of the season. Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi is also on Bayern Munich’s shortlist, but Rangnick is the frontrunner.

The German took over from Man United caretaker manager Michael Carrick at Old Trafford in November 2021 following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils finished the season in sixth place with 58 points, the worst points-total record in their Premier League history.

Rangnick was then snapped up by the Austria national team on a two-year deal in April 2022, with his contract beginning in June.

The 65-year-old has also managed RB Leipzig, Schalke, Hoffenheim, Hannover 96 and VfB Stuttgart.

Confirming the reports, he told 90Minuten: "Bayern Munich contacted us and I also informed the Austrian Federation about it. We have a very trusting relationship.

"My focus is on the Austrian national team. We are completely focused on the European Championships. I feel very comfortable here. At the moment there is no reason to deal with it intensively and specifically."

He added: “If Bayern will tell me: 'we want you'... then I have to ask myself: do I want this at all?'"

Meanwhile, other target De Zerbi has attracted plenty of interest after leading Brighton to their first ever European campaign, guiding the Seagulls to finish sixth last term.

He has also been linked with the soon-to-be vacant Liverpool job.

However, those rumours have petered out in recent weeks, with other favourites for the job emerging.

Next season will mark a huge campaign for Bayern, given they'll be looking to bounce back from losing their first Bundesliga title race since 2012.

Bayer Leverkusen are currently 14 points clear of second place Bayern at the top of the German top flight.

That's despite England captain Harry Kane firing in 33 goals and registering 10 assists in the Bundesliga for them.

They are still in the Champions League, though, with a semi-final against Real Madrid taking place next week.

Bayern confirmed current manager Tuchel will be leaving at the end of the season in February.

The former Chelsea manager had led Bayern to the title last term.

Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso had been linked with the Bayern job.

However, just like Liverpool, they were dealt a huge blow when Alonso pledged his loyalty to the side he guided to the title this term.
